I wasn’t sure what was going to be for lunch today at a farmers’ meeting

In case the meal falls short. Where I live, there are events and community gatherings more frequently than in other areas. I wasn’t sure what was going to be for lunch today at a farmers’ meeting. So I brought these beef sticks and plain pork rinds along in case the meal fell short.

And boy, did it ever! The caterer informed me that the pulled pork had seasoning that contained sugar. The chips, baked beans, ice cream bars, and coleslaw were also a no-go. Good thing I had something with me. I would have starved otherwise. Even the iced tea was pre-sweetened. 🙄

They passed out a survey asking for feedback on the meeting, so I gave them some feedback on the meal, including some easy fixes that would have made for healthier options. I suggested pork without seasoning, having pork rinds and a veggie tray available, and putting the sweetener for the tea on the side.

I think next time I will be sure to bring some fresh veggies and maybe some block cheese to eat in addition to the beef sticks and the pork rinds.

It is mind-boggling that an entire meal would be non-compliant. Certainly we can do much better in this country for our health.

Nancy Zumbach Smith I photographed a wedding a couple months ago and figured I would be ok because there is always salad, cheese and veggies. Nope, walked away from the buffet line with just London broil on my plate. I’m packing almonds and beef sticks for my son’s wedding. lol

Tippi Sladaritz In typical they think of the coleslaw as the side salad, the beans as the veggies, sweet tea is a thing (yum), seasonings are not even considered. I know I cringe also when I see all the sugar and carbs but I totally understand the thought process for the meal. I grew up eating like that at gatherings because we did not have to count every grain of sugar carbs and did not know any different. Hopefully they will have a few better options next time. I am surprised they had no other drink options at least.

When I filled out the survey, I included the statistics from the World Health Organization stating that the global incidence of diabetes in adults 18 years of age or older has gone from 4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014. In hard numbers, that is 108 million people to 422 million. Cause for alarm, wouldn’t you think?
